To ensure the success of any aquatic system it is essential that fluctuations in any water parameters are avoided. Large fluctuations will result in stress, not only for the livestock, but also for the biofauna associated with the biological filters...which are essential for maintaining good water quality! This stress can in turn either directly affect the health of the livestock, or compromise its immune system, leaving it open to secondary infections by opportunistic bacteria, ciliates and other pathogens. One of the principal parameters to maintain is temperature. Aside from the importance of maintaining the temperature itself, it is also worth remembering that many other water parameters are also affected by temperature, for example pH and salinity.
In order to identify the correct equipment, it is necessary to understand the application, as well as the environment in which it is to be installed. Factors such as heat inputs from other equipment (e.g. pumps and lights) and seasonal variations in air temperature (maximum summer temperatures as well as minimum winter temperatures need to be taken into consideration!) will determine whether a heater and/or chiller is required. Most installations will require both forms and it is worth noting that some units are capable of heating as well as chilling.
Immersion Heaters provide a simple solution for heating water bodies, and unlike traditional flow through heaters they do not require a pumped water supply. These types of heaters are widely used in various applications in the Public Aquarium, Aquaculture and Aquatics industries, either as the primary heating source, or as a convenient back up heating system (in tank or on the shelf). An additional controller will be required for controlling the heater to the required set point. The Braude range of immersion heaters are manufactured from high integrity fluoropolymers to give excellent performance in corrosive solutions, making them ideally suited for use in both marine and freshwater installations. The element is designed to have a low watt density to ensure no damage to the livestock tank or its inhabitants.
Flow Through Heaters require a pump fed water supply, and are simple to install. The Elecro digital range are a reliable, economical heater that offer the user precise temperature control (+/- 0.5C). The highly sensitive flow switch, high limiting safety thermostat and integral contactor/relay are standard safety features, along with a built in digital temperature display. The titanium flow tube and elements ensure the heater’s suitability for use on all freshwater and saltwater applications.

Stainless steel units are suitable for use in freshwater systems only.
Heaters and chillers that are to be utilised in saltwater and brackish applications should be manufactured from titanium only. Stainless steel units will corrode!
Heaters should be installed close to the filtration system but must not be installed over reservoirs or other bodies of water. Units must be mounted horizontally and fixed to a wall.
Flow through heaters should be installed at the lowest level of the hydraulic circuit to ensure that they are always filled with water, in the event of a pwer cut.
