Are my corals legal?
May . 08 / 2023

We are excited to announce the launch of the latest guide to support legal coral trade in the UK, created in collaboration with some of the most influential organizations in the industry. As a leading supplier of marine livestock, we understand the importance of responsible and sustainable coral trade practices. That's why we have partnered with OATA, Ecomarines, various industry representatives , JNCC, and Border Force to bring you this comprehensive guide that will help you navigate the legalities of coral trade and promote coral conservation specially in those areas which sit in a grey area.

The new guide is designed to provide valuable information on the legal requirements for coral trade in the UK and the best practices to ensure that coral is traded responsibly and sustainably. These rules are only applicable to UK. The guide covers topics such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the EU Wildlife Trade Regulations, and the UK Border Force guidance on importing and exporting coral. It also includes information on the different types of corals and their conservation status, as well as the role that the industry can play in protecting coral reefs. Specifically it addresses the issue of coralimorphs and the importance of understanding the different fisheries in Australias and restrictions the UK has implemented in the last couple of years.

The guide was developed in collaboration with OATA, the UK's trade association for the ornamental aquatic industry, Ecomarines, a marine wholesaler in the UK, JNCC, the UK's statutory adviser on nature conservation, and Border Force, the agency responsible for enforcing customs and immigration regulations at the UK border. Their expertise and input were invaluable in ensuring that the guide is accurate, up-to-date, and relevant to the needs of the industry.
