Western PacificSubtropical southern Japan, Ogasawara Is., and ranging south to Taiwan. Seemingly separate population in the Western Indian Ocean, Réunion and off Durban, South Africa. Occurs on deep reefs, usually at depths of 60m or more. Sometimes caught on fishing lines. A spectacular basslet, mostly pink with greenish yellow blotches on the body and stripes behind and below eye over cheek. Filaments on soft dorsal and caudal fin rays, and third dorsal-fin spine elongated in large adults. Length to at least 15cm.
