Arrow Grouper

Tropical Indo-Pacific from east Africa to Central Pacific. Typically seen in large caves and overhangs of outer reefs along steep walls. Stays in the shade, but swims about openly. May look almost black in a dark cave, but the yellow saddle-spot on the caudal peduncle stands out and is eye-catching. Generally bluish grey with numerous small dusky spots. Usually keeps fins erect and spinous dorsal and ventral fins are marked with black blotches and pale blue. Small juveniles have a leopard-like pattern of dark spots. Length to 15cm.
