Place of origin:Western Indian Ocean
Widespread West Pacific and ranging into Indian Ocean to Christmas Island. Seen in rocky reefs in current prone habitats at depths of 20m or more. Juveniles black with white spots. Black reduces with growth to black saddles over back, at eyes, nape, dorsal fins and caudal peduncle. Body grey to yellowish with small white spots. Fins mostly clear, 1st dorsal fin with black. Length to 34cm.
