Southern Japan to Sangihe Is. and northern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Inner reef channels and deep coral slopes in semi-protected habitats. Usually swims high above the substrate when feeding on zooplankton. Occurs mainly at depths of 10-25m. Juveniles and females plain pink. Australian siblings have yellow spots. Males with red blotch on soft part of dorsal fin, often covering most of it, except for last few rays, and may extend as a band along spinous part. Length to at least 18cm, excluding caudal fin filaments.
