Western PacificA very distinct species with ocelli in the soft rayed part of the dorsal fin and long barbels on the snout. Rarely seen during the day, but commonly seen at night in many areas on shallow coastal reef flats and in caves, like all lionfishes mainly nocturnally active. Usually seen singly but also pairs have been observed during courtship at dusk, males can be recognised by their grey, not black, ocelli.
