Place of origin:Melanesia
Widespread West Pacific, some variations. Coastal bays to outer reefs along drop-offs with caves and rich invertebrate habitats. Distinctive species with large bluish-black blotch behind eye. Juveniles and females with black spots at each end and one in centre of dorsal fin and an additional ocellus on the caudal fin base. Pink on outer reefs and more reddish inshore with longitudinal stripes along lower part of body. Adults occur in small groups. Juveniles solitary. Length to 12cm.
