Eastern Australia from the capricorn region to northern NSW, but juveniles expatriate far south, and New Caledonia. Various reef habitats to about 30m depth, adults usually at depths over 20m. Juveniles on algae reefs near sand and rubble zones. Closely related to Macropharyngodon moyeri and M.vivienae. Identified by their distinctive colouration. Length to 10cm.
