Western Indian OceanWidespread Indo-West Pacific, but appears to be absent in Flores and Banda seas. Ranges to sub-tropical zones as juveniles. Some geographical variations, especial between the Red Sea and the rest of the Indo-Pacific. Occurs on sheltered algae-rock reefs or sparse coral habitats, often in semi-exposed surge zones on shallow reef flats with gutters, where juveniles utilise the rubble on the sea bed. Juveniles distinctly coloured pale, almost white, with false eyes on the dorsal fin, shaded by orange on the body below. Length to 60cm.
