MélanésieWest Pacific, Japan to north-western Australia. Few specimens reported from the Philippines and Indonesia near Wallace's line. Occurs mainly on deep slopes with coralline algae and rubble. Juveniles with 5 red longitudinal lines. Adults mostly bright red with a distinct 'ear' spot, whitish below. Length to 32cm.
