MelanesiaWest Pacific. Indonesia, Coral Sea and scattered Pacific locations as far as Line Islands. Usually found along clear water drop-offs with moderate currents at depths from about 6-10m. Often occur in large schools of mixed sexes to feed on zooplankton when currents are sweeping the reef. Males display with a bright red dorsal fin and hold their ventral fins greatly extended. Females mainly orange with yellowish tail and a pink line from the tip of the snout angling down, passing through the lower part of the eye. Length to 90mm.
