MélanésieWidespread West Pacific, ranging from southern Japan to northern Australia, and a few scattered populations in the South Pacific. Several localised colour forms. Common along outer reefs in Indonesia. Usually found along outer-reef walls with moderate currents at depths from 10-50m. Young and females with series of orange-red blotches over the back below the soft part of the dorsal fin, followed by a red streak onto the tail. Length to 9cm, excluding filamentous tips.
